Maja Parker is a documentary photographer and multi media artist based out of Massachusetts, pursuing work concerned with social and economic justice. She recently graduated from the Savannah College of Art and Design with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in photography with a documentary concentration.
Though the primary focus of her work is her photography, in her free time she pursues other mediums such as woodworking, metal working, ceramics, printmaking, alternative processes, collage, and any other craft she can get her hands on. She continues to pursue her academic interests through personal study of social and economic justice.
She finds inspiration from art activists such as Ai Weiwei and Nan Goldin, as well as art activist groups such as Gran Fury and Guerrilla Girls, who have used their work to speak out against cultural and social institutions which do not benefit the people.
Gran Fury, an arts activist group in the 1980’s advocating for AIDS awareness wrote these prevailing words on one of their earlier posters — “Art is not enough, seize power through direct action.” They did not desire for the viewer to remember the medium, but the message behind it.
In a time as influential as the 21st century, in the current sociopolitical climate of the United States, it is pertinent to be the conveyor of these messages. Through Maja’s photography and variety of academic and artistic interests, she aspires to create impactful work that does just that.
She is currently seeking work in the public art / arts justice field, and encourages those in the field to reach out and connect!
